NEW Therapy Values

Effective therapy requires that the client and the therapist share foundational values from which motivations as well as rules of conduct and communication follow. Trying to succeed in therapy without sharing the same values is like trying to understand another person without sharing the same language or trying to travel from one city to another using a different than other road users highway code. Sharing common values allows people and civilisations to flourish and disagreement on values always leads to trouble (this can be clearly observed in our times). Shared values create a platform on which also success in therapy (as in any other relationship) can be built. I invite you to think deeply about values and how each one works in your life. I will start you off with the following fundamentals:

Fairness:

Fairness ensures that everyone is treated justly, without bias or favoritism, on mutually agreed/negotiated basis. It promotes harmony and cooperation by addressing the needs and rights of all individuals. In a society, in a group, and in any other relationship, fairness fosters trust and prevents resentment, leading to long-term stability and success.

Trust:

Trust is the foundation of any meaningful relationship, whether personal, professional, or societal. It creates an environment where people

can rely on one another, reducing fear and uncertainty. Without trust, collaboration breaks down, and progress becomes difficult due to suspicion and a lack of communication.

Gratitude:

Gratitude nurtures positive emotions and strengthens bonds between people, encouraging mutual respect and support. By appreciating what we have and acknowledging others' contributions, it helps combat feelings of entitlement or dissatisfaction. Gratitude also fosters resilience and contentment, which are crucial for mental well-being.

Honesty:

Honesty builds credibility and ensures clear communication, which is essential for solving problems and making decisions. It fosters transparency, reducing misunderstandings and conflict. A culture of honesty creates an atmosphere where people feel secure and valued, as they can trust that others are being genuine.

Prudence:

Prudence involves careful judgment and foresight, enabling individuals to make wise decisions that consider both short-term and long-term consequences. It helps in avoiding impulsive actions that may cause harm or regret. By promoting thoughtful decision-making, prudence ensures a balanced and responsible approach to life.

Forgiveness:

Forgiveness allows individuals and societies to move past hurt and conflict, enabling healing and reconciliation. It breaks the cycle of resentment and revenge, fostering peace and emotional well-being. While forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing, it promotes growth by allowing people to learn from mistakes and rebuild trust.

Temperance:

Temperance encourages self-control and moderation, helping individuals avoid excess and maintain balance in life. It prevents harmful behaviors that arise from indulgence or impulsiveness, promoting mental and physical well-being. By fostering discipline, temperance supports a stable, harmonious life both personally and socially.

Fortitude:

Fortitude is the courage to face challenges, adversity, and pain with resilience and perseverance. It is essential for overcoming obstacles and achieving goals, especially in difficult situations. Fortitude also builds mental and emotional strength, enabling individuals to stay committed to their values and purpose, even in the face of hardship.
